Turkish Cargo is Mapping a $100 Billion Future

Global leader Turkish Airlines prepares for the next decade with a massive new investment initiative and groundbreaking plans for a next-generation cargo terminal.

The Strategy: A Vision of Massive Scale

Turkish Airlines has officially launched a monumental investment initiative, signaling its intent to lead the skies through the next decade. This commitment, totaling TRY 100 billion (approximately $2.32 billion), is focused on massive infrastructure expansion, technological innovation, and the facilities required to support its status as a top global carrier. For Turkish Cargo, this signifies a significant surge in both belly-hold capacity and specialized freighter operations as the carrier works toward its 2033 vision of operating a fleet of over 800 aircraft.

The Infrastructure: The Hub of the Future

At the center of this expansion is the SmartIST Phase 2 project at Istanbul Airport. While the existing facility is already a global benchmark, this new phase will more than double its annual handling capacity—increasing it from 2.2 million to 4.5 million tonnes.

This facility is designed to be a “Decision Engine” for global logistics, with gradual completion scheduled for 2027–2028. Key features include:

  • Automated Excellence: High-speed, high-tech sorting systems designed to minimize dwell times.
  • Specialized Logistics Zones: Dedicated areas for e-commerce, temperature-controlled pharma, and high-security valuable cargo.
  • E-Commerce Integration: A new E-Commerce Complex, entering service in 2026, will feature “Widect”—a door-to-door integrated cargo solution model.
  • Global Crossroads: Cementing Istanbul’s role as the primary bridge between Asian manufacturing hubs and Western consumer markets.

The Impact on the NAP Ecosystem

As a vital pillar of our global network, Turkish Cargo’s expansion provides our members with unmatched connectivity. Whether through the recently launched specialized solutions or this massive increase in global reach, these developments ensure that NAP members have the resources of a “Global Giant” to remain champions in their local markets.
